    What is Pulmonary Rehabilitation?

    Pulmonary Rehabilitation is a medically supervised, physician prescribed, education and exercise program for people with lung disease.

    Why does an individual need Pulmonary Rehabilitation?

    • To increase exercise tolerance and level of physical activity.
    • To increase independence and ability to perform activities of daily living.
    • To improve quality of life, and provide a comfortable atmosphere with group support from other participants with similar lung disease(s)/impairment(s).
    • To increase knowledge of lung disease or impairment.
    • To increase knowledge in techniques to control breathlessness.
    • To increase knowledge on the importance of medications and proper use of inhalers.

    Who staffs Pulmonary Rehabilitation?

    The program is directed by a pulmonologist and staffed by exercise specialists, physical therapists, registered nurses, and respiratory therapists. Each participant receives an individual treatment plan designed according to their needs and health status.

    When do you receive Pulmonary Rehabilitation?

    The program includes exercise sessions two times each week, and group education sessions one time each week. The class size varies from four to eight participants. The program duration is approximately eight weeks, but may vary according to the patient’s progress.

    Who is eligible to participate in the program?

    Eligible participants include but are not limited to those who have been diagnosed with emphysema, asthma, COPD, chronic bronchitis, occupational/environmental lung disease, sarcoidosis, and pre/post lung surgery. A physician referral is required prior to beginning the program.

    What is Pulmonary Rehab Maintenance?

    Upon completion of the eight week Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program, participants may enter the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Maintenance Program. Classes are held two times a week in a supervised, but less intensely monitored environment. The program is designed to promote long term compliance to exercise, and provide group support in a comfortable atmosphere.
